What is Customer success?

Definition

A discipline focused on ensuring customers achieve their desired outcomes. Originated in SaaS but increasingly relevant for service businesses where renewals depend on demonstrated value.

Why it matters

Customer success matters to an owner whose revenue depends on renewals, repeat visits, or long relationships, because a customer who never actually gets the result they paid for won't stick around no matter how good the sales pitch was. Being proactive about outcomes — checking in, catching problems early — is what turns a one-time buyer into a loyal one and a source of referrals. The tradeoff is that it takes deliberate effort and often a dedicated point of contact, which is why small businesses tend to lean on it reactively (only when a customer complains) instead of getting ahead of issues.
